blog idol

Congrats to everyone who was longlisted for the Irish Blog Awards, and I suppose that includes myself, since I’m up for Best Blog and Best Personal Blog. Much thanks to all who nominated me, and I suppose that also includes myself!!!

Now we all know what I’m going to say next, don’t we?

You know, all the stuff about how I’m really not that concerned about winning, I’m just happy to be involved…how grateful I am to Damien Mulley for organizing the event…how nice it will be to hook up with fellow bloggers at the ceremony…all that pretty much goes without saying, so I won’t say it in this post. At least not again.

This year’s event, however, has some added spice I reckon.

There are those out there who can’t make head or tail of the blogging phenomenon – in fact there are many who ridicule it. Quite recently, on Newstalk, that mindset was given a face and a name – Mr John Waters, the blogosphere’s answer to Simon Cowell.

Seemingly he conducted extensive research pouring over 1000s of Irish blogs (not) and ultimately he came to the conclusion that anyone who uses the medium can’t string three coherent words together.

Oh yeah, and they’re stupid.

So what he’s saying is that if there were to be some kind of contest between media, blogging would come dead last. Well I suppose he would know what it takes to come last in contests, wouldn’t he?

Of course there was bound to be a backlash from the blogging community, and I abstained mostly because I had visions of Waters gleefully grinning at his computer as he surfed from site to site seeing his name being mentioned, fully aware that negative publicity is better than none at all. I guess now there has been so much written I don't mind chipping in as well.

There's also the fact that when bloggers assemble on March 1st in the Alexander Hotel (hopefully I will be among them), we will get the opportunity to pay as much homage to the esteemed Irish Times journalist as we possibly can.

Personally I’d love to see a picture of the congregation all seated holding up cardboard cut-outs of Waters’ mug to create some kind of V for Vendetta type scenario, but I’m sure more creative minds will come up with something better to honour the man. Maybe a sponsor could provide “John Waters is Stupid” t-shirts for everyone in the audience?

Anyway, there’s buckets of scope there. Whatever happens, it should be a great night to look forward to.
