putting the “shock” in “taoiseach”
I believe that only the cream of the crop bloggers get away with more than one post a day. That’s why I only do the one.
But up until the 6 o’clock news yesterday evening, I was torn between two stories to cover for my Thursday offering.
First there was Dustin the Turkey getting carved up by the voters at the semifinal stage of the Eurovision Crapfest.
Then there was Declan Gaffney of the leading Lisbon Nay-Sayers group Liber-tossers getting drawn into the public arena by the various political leaders, as rightly he should be.
But in his first Leaders’ Questions, Taoiseach Without Mandate Brian Cowen beat both stories to the punch when he was caught on mic using the “f” word in the Dáil.
Of course it was the classic dilemma for political pundits. If you want, you could say he was heroic in the way he stood up to the Opposition who were doing their best to rattle him on his maiden question time on the sticky subject of Health.
But there was also much for Enda Kenny to seize on – conduct unbecoming of a Taoiseach in a public forum, clear evidence that the heckling got to him, not to mention clear evidence that he didn’t really want to answer the questions put before him.
I have a funny feeling this won’t be the last time we see fireworks at Leader’s Questions.
