where there’s a will, there’s bertie

Although it seems every day there is an even more bizarre revelation/explanation regarding Bertie’s finances, they are not the reason I am sickened by the whole scenario.

What has me throwing stuff at the telly is the footage of our ex-Taoiseach going in and out of the building, with morons cheering him on and asking for autographs as if he was some kind of rock star; not to mention the defiant "What are ya gonna do?"swagger with which the man carries himself.

And if we thought the whole “I won it on a horse” defence took the biscuit, yesterday’s “I never knew he left the house to me in a will” was bettered even still by Micheal Wall’s assertion that he “forgot” about writing said testament.

I’ll leave you with the words of outspoken Fine Gael TD Leo Varadkar in the Dáil only last night...

“This is a defence for drug dealers. This is a defence for pimps. This is not the kind of thing that should be tolerated from a former Taoiseach and a former member of this House.

People have such a low opinion of politicians because we won’t root out the rotten apples in our own barrel, and we allow them to contaminate our entire system.

We need to get real. Politics in this country is falling apart. We have to make ourselves relevant to show the people that we work hard and we have to start to restore trust in politics.

When I’m a doctor, for some reason I’m treated with undeserved respect and I’m paid a hell of a lot more.

Yet when I’m a politician I’m treated like a pariah, a liar, somebody who is lazy and does no work. I am paid a lot less than when I was a doctor yet every penny I earn I’m begrudged it by the people and by journalists who earn much more than me.

That was one of the reasons the Lisbon Treaty referendum was defeated – the people have such a low opinion of us.”
