don’t waste your vote

Declan Ganley was having a quiet drink with his wife the night before the Lisbon2 referendum.

It was relatively quiet in the pub, so when the lounge girl saw the couple were more than halfway through their drinks, she asked if they’d like to order another. Ganley, who was in the process of subjecting his beloved to yet another rant about democracy, was annoyed at the interruption and shooed the girl away with a brush of his hand.

About fifteen minutes later, he called her over when he was ready to order, but she ignored him. He actually had to go after her and stand before her to get her attention.

“Why are you ignoring me?” he asked her, “Oh, wait, I suppose you’re a Yes voter and you know who I am, is that right?”

“Actually I totally agree with you on Lisbon and I’m voting No,” said the girl, “And since you’ve already said no once to another drink I want to respect your decision and make sure you’re not asked again.”

Seriously folks, whatever your views on this issue, PLEASE don’t waste your vote today should you have one. Although I voted Yes the last time and intend to do so again today, it wasn’t the result that embarrassed me so much as the pathetic 53% turnout.

And whatever the result, since Taoiseach Without Mandate Brian Cowen gave us assurances there will be no Lisbon3, I’ll be at least happy I won’t find myself on the same side of an argument as people like him and Michael O’Leary anymore…

Aye, low turn out is always a poor reflection on people. Considering this referendum has generated so much talk amongst the general public, I'm surprised to see the turnout is still incredibly low in so many constituencies.
